In 1977 the elegant Bentley T1 was replaced by the T2, with more precise rack-and-pinion steering, revised suspension, flared wheel arches containing wider tyres, improved air conditioning, new fascia and front air dam.

Naturally the cabin was as sumptuous as his Lordship would expect, with enough walnut, Wilton and cowhide to match his favourite Pall Mall club. Self-levelling independent suspension, eight-way adjustable electric front seats and a triplicate hydraulic braking system (patented by Citroen) ensured that smooth and dignified progress was matched by startlingly effective retardation.

Supplied new in February 1978, soon after the repositioning of the passenger door mirror, this T2 has been subject to a considerable recommissioning by respected local Bentley and RR specialist NRT of Corse Lawn. Works on file total some £38,904 including purchase and the recommissioning works carried out through 2017 and-18.

The key with a project like this is to start with a good car from the onset, which this was. Work undertaken included a comprehensive strip down, replacement sills, a full re-paint in beautiful Caribbean Blue, new brakes including spheres and pumps, a new exhaust system, new OPUS ignition system and new coil springs and dampers. The engine was also fully serviced with all fluids renewed including diff oil.

The electric window motors were stripped and cleaned, with one recon motor from Flying Spares, under-bonnet re-wire, replacement front seat switch and conversion to modern Air Conditioning R134a gas with a new condenser, new potentiometers and current board. The interior was reconnolised and recoloured and the door cappings treated, along with a new boot carpet and fitment of a new retro look CD player.

Looking most appealing in Caribbean Blue with an unusual navy hide to the front and Navy velour to the rear, it has covered just 52,797 miles to date – only a couple of thousand being covered since the works were completed. The history file for the car includes a folder of photographs showing in depth, its recent attention along with invoices and detailed description of these as well as the V5C and recent Bentley Driver’s club valuation by Allan Fog at £32,500.
