This pretty little Singer Junior started life as Saloon but is all the more appealing for having been converted to a Tourer. The work was done in 2011, shortly before our vendor bought the car and a photographic record of the restoration is on file.
The work included fitting a new ash frame, repairing and re-painting the bodywork and fitting new interior trim panels. There is a tonneau cover with the car, but no hood or frame.
In 2014 our vendor overhauled the engine. The block was bored and new, high compression pistons were fitted – this makes a huge difference to the 885cc engine and gives the car the extra zest it needs, especially in hilly areas (or when trialling). The head also received new valves.
The crank was polished and new white metal bearings were fitted; the gearbox was rebuilt with all new gears, shafts and bearings. The electrical system was re-wired, converted to 12 volts, the starter motor re-wound and a new Lucas dynamo fitted. A new petrol tank was fitted along with new fuel lines and pump. The car also received a new exhaust system.
The car was first registered in December 1930, which makes it eligible for all Vintage Sports Car and Light Car Club events. In fact, the vendor has had great fun with the car in events organised by both groups.
The Singer Junior was a well-made car in its day and the number two best-seller behind the Austin 7. This car has had a great deal of time and effort put into it to turn it into a very useable and reliable vintage light car. The estimate quoted seems a most reasonable figure for such a well-sorted car.
