In 1956 Volvo launched one of its most successful model ranges, the Amazon series, which was to remain in production until 1970. Starting with the 121 and 122 models, the Amazon range soon established itself as a comfortable, reliable and superbly well-built car which also introduced new levels of safety equipment – still very much a novelty in the mid-Fifties!

Beautifully proportioned, the Amazon was styled by Jan Wilsgaard who was inspired by American cars of the period. It was also one of the first cars to feature an ergonomically designed cabin, with multi-adjustable seats and thoughtfully laid out controls. Immensely rugged and well-engineered, it was the car that laid the foundations for Volvo’s great reputation.
First registered in January 1970, this particular 122S is the desirable 2-door model and came to the UK fully restored from Durban, South Africa in 2018 and has since formed part of a Cardiff Volvo dealers ‘Heritage portfolio’.

There is little in the way of paperwork bar the import and current registration documents along with the current MOT certificate, although as this was due to expire just prior to the sale the car will come with a fresh ticket to August 2020.

Unfortunately, part of their collection needs to be reduced and as the old adage goes, last in, first out. Finished in green with a superbly inviting brown interior, the car sits just right. A look under the bonnet shows the standard of restoration, it must surely be one of the best in the country.

These handsome and practical classics are surprisingly good to drive and this one looks enticing at the guide price suggested today.
