The MGA was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1955 and was a radical departure from MG’s traditional ash framed models that had come before.

It was called the MGA as it represented a new beginning and was even marketed as the “first of a new line”. Beautifully styled on the Syd Enever-designed Le Mans-bodied TD, it used a strong cross braced chassis with steel bodywork attached. In production until 1962 when the ubiquitous MGB was launched, it proved a huge success with over 101,000 examples produced of which only 5,900 were sold in the UK market.

Here we have a fantastic opportunity for someone to benefit from another’s hard graft! There does not appear to be much history from this MGA’s early life. Owned for some time by a chap in the RAF the MGA moved around a lot. Bought by the Vendor as an abandoned project in 2017 he was pleased to discover that most of the major jobs had already been completed, albeit in the 1990s.

Thought to have originally been painted white the car appears to have been resprayed Iris blue in the 1990s. The chassis was welded and painted with Hammerite chassis black. The engine, thought to be a Riley block, had been rebuilt. At that stage it had fibreglass front wings which have now been replaced with steel. All was progressing well and in 2017  the car went to the paint shop.. months passed with no progress being made. The Vendor had already started a new GT40 project so the MGA languished at the back of the shop. Recently returned in a very dusty state the Vendor decided that he is unlikely to get round to completing the car so has decided to offer it for sale.

Amongst the parts there is smart hood, frame and side screens. The seats have been retrimmed and there is a new carpet set and armrest still in bags. There is a hardtop which is in good condition as is the screen, although the surround could do with re-chroming. There are lots of parts still wrapped, including a new grille, badges and trim. The Vendor assures us that nothing major is missing although it’s hard to be sure, but the car is basically solid and ready to work on!

A great opportunity to build an MGA exactly how you want it, or with a bit of research it could be restored to as new condition - the choice is yours.
