Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its W107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W129-series SL was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Brimful of cutting-edge technology, its impressively rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car ever sensed an impending flip) and an electric soft top roof. Known for its sure-footed handling, the W129 featured all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering.

Powered by a variety of six- and eight-cylinder engines all allied to automatic transmission, it was the sportscar of choice for many contemporary F1 drivers. The flagship model was the mighty SL500 which marked the debut of Mercedes' four-valve-per-cylinder, dual-overhead V8 powerplant with variable valve timing. Its 4973cc V8 was credited with 326bhp and 332lbft of torque. Capable of over 150mph and 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds, it was nevertheless a paragon of refinement.

First registered in June 1992, this particular SL500 looks most appealing in Nautic Blue with a Pebble leather interior. Said to be in very good condition throughout and to drive beautifully with everything working as it should, it has covered 135,000 miles with no fewer than 17 service stamps to date (giving an average service interval of less than 8,000 miles). Last serviced in March this year, it is currently MOTd and taxed and is ready to drive away today. These big 500 Mercs really are fabulously impressive machines and this one looks remarkable value at the guide price suggested today, especially when you consider that it cost some £70,000 when new!
