Launched at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, the W140-Class was the new flagship model range from Mercedes and remained in production until 1998. Costing over $1bn to develop, the W140 introduced innovations such as optional double-pane window glazing, power-assisted closing for doors and boot lid, computerized traction control, hydropneumatic suspension, electric windows which lowered back down upon encountering an obstruction, sonar-assisted parking and a heating system which, if desired, continued to emit warm air after the engine was turned off. It came in a range of body styles ranging from a two-door coupe to a long wheelbase limousine, with a choice of engines ranging from a 3-litre straight-six to a 4.2-litre V8 and a 6-litre V12.

First registered in August 1997, this particular S320 Limousine is presented in classic Mercedes silver with a full grey leather interior. Powered by a silky smooth 224bhp 3.2-litre straight-six engine with automatic transmission, it has covered 119,000 miles with 13 service stamps to date. The vendor states that the car “has no known faults and has always proved utterly reliable” and that the three potential weaknesses of this model (the heater blower, the wiring loom and the head gasket) are all “spot on”. Last serviced just before the sale and with an MOT until August, this deeply impressive machine looks spectacular value at the guide price suggested today. The icing on the cake is a nice personalised number plate, EEZ 8879.
