Without doubt one of the prettiest roadsters ever made, the Pagoda SL is also superbly well built and is one of those rare classics that you can genuinely use every day. Launched in 1963, the W113 class (as it was properly known) eventually spanned three engine sizes, all fuel-injected: the initial 150bhp 2.3-litre; the similarly powerful 2.5 in 1966 and the 170bhp 2.8-litre in 1967. Suspension was by double wishbones and coil springs at the front, with a coil-sprung swing axle at the rear. Later cars had disc brakes all round and a seven main bearing crank, rather than the four of the 230SL.

All looked identical with a low waistline, wide stance, fishbowl headlamps and big curved greenhouse windows topped with that distinctive dished removable hardtop – hence the 'Pagoda' name. The styling perfectly sums up the car, being elegant yet muscular and sporty yet immensely solid, a rare combination of virtues which make it a timeless beauty that is always highly sought after.

This left-hand drive 1967 250SL has recently been imported from America where it had been in the same ownership since 1972. Said to be in "rust free" condition, it has recently been treated to extensive refurbishment. This is said to have included: an engine service with the fitment of new plugs, points and filters; an overhaul of the braking system and replacement of the calipers; the reconditioning of the fuel metering unit and overhaul of the fuel system and tank.

Cosmetic improvements included: a respray in beige; fitting new Cognac-coloured seat covers and carpets; the replacement of various items of chrome trim; fitting a new hood, Becker radio and tyres all round. Fully UK registered with all duties and taxes paid, it has an MOT until February 2011 and comes with both hard and soft tops. The 250SL is the rarest of all the Pagoda models with only around 5,200 produced and this one would appear to be a very sound and appealing example.
