Launched way back in 1975 as a replacement for the E-Type, the Jaguar XJS is one of those rare cars that got better and better as it evolved – all too often it is the first model that is the best while the later ones just get lardier and lumpier. The first major facelift came in 1991 when the Big Cat got larger rear windows, new rear wings, different lights and revised instruments. It also got the superb new 4-litre 24-valve AJ6 engine, a paragon of refinement and reliability that was virtually as quick as the old V12 but with far superior fuel economy (235bhp and 26mpg). Build quality also improved markedly with a galvanized body shell finally putting paid to that old Jaguar bugbear of rust. Reliability was superb and these AJ6 engines have been known to clock up 400,000 miles without drama.

First registered in August 1993, this particular XJS 4-litre was kept by its previous owner for some 13 years. It has covered around 124,000 miles from new and is said to be “mechanically excellent” and “cosmetically very good with a very nice interior.” All the electrical systems work as they should including electric windows, seats and mirrors; climate control; front and rear cabin lights; remote central locking; 6-disc CD changer. Previously used as a show car with a couple of trophies to its name, it comes with a fair amount of service history, a current MOT and tax and is ready for immediate use.
