Some cars just get better looking with age and the W107 Series Mercedes-Benz SL is definitely among them. Overshadowed for a long time by its graceful ‘Pagoda’ predecessor, it is now becoming better appreciated for what it is – a beautifully built sports roadster that is as dependable as an oak tree. To this day, no car door closes with a more reassuring ‘thunk’ than a Mercedes SL, and everything about the car contrives to make even granite feel a bit flimsy. Fast, comfortable and discreetly understated, the SL has a matchless ability to munch up the miles for year after year without ever seeming to falter. No wonder it stayed in production fundamentally unaltered from 1971 until 1989 – the longest production run of any Mercedes to date.

The cars came in a wide range of engine sizes using both straight-six and V8 engines, ranging from 2.8 to 5-litres in capacity. Introduced in 1985 to replace the 380 model, the 420SL was powered by a 4.2-litre V8 that produced 215bhp and 289lb/ft of torque and was good for a top speed of 135mph.

Dating from 1986, this particular car has had just three owners from new and covered only 67,300 miles to date – barely run in for one of these engines. Said to be in excellent condition throughout with gleaming red coachwork and a cream leather interior, it also has the desirable option of air conditioning. Supplied with both hard and soft tops, a hard top stand and cover, it is also fitted with an alarm. With a good service history, 12 months’ MOT and six months’ tax, it is ready to whisk you off to the Cote D'Azure tomorrow. Lovely!

Please note the personalised number shown will be replaced by an age related plate, D903 ROH, prior to the sale.
