One of no fewer than five W107 Mercedes Convertibles in our sale today, all with different engine capacities, this particular 300SL model is considered by some to have the most desirable specification of all the SLs, combing sportscar performance with acceptable economy.

Launched in 1985 and remaining in production until 1989, the 300SL was powered by a creamy-smooth 3-litre straight six that employed a new KE Jetronic fuel injection system linked to a modern engine management computer that not only achieved better fuel economy than the 280 it replaced but more power as well. The official figures were 185bhp and 188lb/ft of torque, sufficient to propel the car to 60mph in just 9.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130mph. Almost as quick as the larger V8 models, it was not only more frugal but also handled better thanks to improved weight distribution.

First registered in January 1987, this cream example has had just three owners from new and has covered a mere 67,000 miles to date with a full service history. Said to be “a very fine example” it comes with both soft and hard tops plus a stand to store the latter on when not in use. Supplied with its original handbook pack and a substantial number of bills relating to its stamped up service book, it is currently taxed and MOTd and is ready for immediate use.
