History
This is believed to be one of only about 30 Wilcomoto competition off-roaders produced between 1981-83. Hand-built by Wilcox Engineering of Holme Lacey, Hereford, these state-of-the-art bikes were designed to provide a competitive alternative to the wave of Japanese bikes that were then taking over the motocross world. Fast, powerful and very light, they featured a magnesium 500cc engine, magnesium wheel hubs, magnesium lower front forks, box-section aluminium swingarm and a plastic fuel tank and airbox. The single progressive rate rear shock absorber was years ahead of its time and also made extensive use of magnesium. Air intake was by reed valve and a single 40mm Dellorto carb. The frame was made from Reynolds tubing and braking was by disc at the front and drum at the rear. Unfortunately the bikes achieved only moderate success in competition and production soon fizzled out.
This particular bike has had just one owner since 1984, during which time it has had only about one hour's use. It is still said to be in excellent running order with the only known fault being the front disc brake which has begun to lose it's chrome coating. This is a very rare and unusual bike which would make a fascinating addition to any collection at a remarkably low guide price.
