History
Apart from gaining a much-needed extra factory, Jaguar's acquisition of Daimler in 1960 also brought with it the exquisite Ed Turner designed V8 engine. By installing this 2,548cc 'hemi' into the MKII bodyshell, Jaguar hoped to create a more exclusive, upmarket car that would appeal to Daimler's more traditional client base.
Launched in 1962, the new model was instantly distinguished from its Jaguar siblings by the traditional Daimler fluted grille and was initially only available with a bench front seat and 3-speed automatic box. Otherwise identical to the MKII, it featured all round disc brakes, independent front suspension and a Panhard rod located live rear axle. With 140bhp and 155lbft of torque on tap from its magnificently smooth and sonorous V8, the Daimler was capable of 115mph. It was also said to enjoy superior chassis dynamics thanks to its more favourable weight distribution.
This particular car is an earlier model with the desirable deep bumpers and comes with a Heritage Certificate confirming its date of manufacture as 5th August 1966. The car apparently spent most of its early life in sunny Jersey, hence the excellent, original appearance of the bodywork and structure which does not bear any signs of significant previous restoration. Unlike many restored cars, all the panel gaps are excellent and the doors open and shut beautifully. The red leather interior is in good original condition and all the woodwork is also good.
The car was re-imported back to England in 2001 when it was bought by the current vendor from the E-Type Centre in Warwickshire. It has a full service history from this date proving that it has been well looked after since then. This includes a full Waxoyl treatment in 2001; new gearbox and propshaft mountings in the same year; new door and boot rubber seals; new Kevlar coolant hoses and a recored, uprated radiator; a new fuel pump in 2002; rebuilt carbs and distributor in 2005.
Always garaged by the current vendor and kept in regular, gentle use, the car was last serviced less than 300 miles ago, is MOTd until August 2007 and is said to drive beautifully with the desirable option of power assisted steering. The indicated mileage of 78,500 is believed to be genuine. It comes complete with an original owner's manual and a very comprehensive factory workshop manual which will help to keep it in good condition for many years to come.
Although the paintwork has lost some of its original lustre, this is still an exceptionally nice, unmolested example of these beautifully refined saloons which needs to be seen and driven to be fully appreciated.
