Ten years and over $1bn in development time and costs, the W140 Series Mercedes was finally launched in 1991 and introduced innovations such as double-pane window glazing, power-assisted closing for doors and boot lid, electric windows which lowered back down upon encountering an obstruction, sonar-assisted parking and a heating system which, if desired, continued to emit warm air after the engine was turned off.

For details like this, the W140 is often known as the last Mercedes to be 'over-engineered', a Mercedes trait that was costing the company in product delays and over-budgeting. Available as either a saloon or a coupe, it came with a choice of engines ranging from a 2.8-litre straight-six to a mighty 6-litre V12 which produced 402bhp and 428lb/ft of torque. It remained in production until 1999 with a styling face-lift in 1994.

First registered in April 1994, this particular S600 Coupe has the range-topping 6-litre V12 engine and looks most attractive in metallic black with a beige hide interior. A demonstrator for the first three months of its life, it has only had one registered keeper since and has covered just 56,400 miles from new. It comes with a full Mercedes main dealer service history comprising nine stamps to date, the last less than 6,000 miles ago.

The car is fitted with AMG alloy wheels and suspension and also benefits from an upgraded walnut trim interior which cost an extra £3,324 in 1994 (invoice on file). Said to be in excellent condition throughout and to drive superbly with an MOT until June 2012, the car comes with all its original handbooks, most old MOTs and tax discs, plus its original factory build sheets. Massively expensive and exclusive when new, this luxurious motorcar looks incredible value at the guide price suggested today.
