THIS CAR HAS NOW BEEN WITHDRAWN DUE TO A CLUTCH FAULT WHICH CANNOT BE FIXED BEFORE THE AUCTION.

The Mercedes-Benz W111 Series was produced in saloon form from 1959 to 1968 and in coupe and cabriolet form from 1961 to 1971. All versions were initially powered by a 2.2-litre six-cylinder engine with 95bhp in standard tune rising to 120bhp in fuel-injection form as found in the top SEb model you see here. When mated to a manual gearbox this gave the car a top speed of 107mph with a 0-60mph time of 14 seconds. Designed by Paul Bracq, the car was beautifully proportioned and exquisitely detailed with superb build quality and a mighty price tag that restricted ownership to a privileged few.

First registered in April 1964, this original UK market right-hand drive example has had just three owners from new and has covered some 84,000 miles to date (with a documented speedo change in 1972 at 63,935 miles). The previous keeper was a Colonel in the Territorial Army who owned the car from 1988 until 2003 and fitted it with the personalized number plate, 100 TTA, which has been valued at £3,500 and is included in the sale. He also put the 250SE badge on the boot, which is incorrect.

In the current ownership since 2003, the car has always been in regular use and has completed three trips to Le Mans, the last in 2010, and has always performed faultlessly, cruising happily at 70mph. A retired motor engineer, the owner has maintained the car himself but had the tappets recently re-set at Mercedes specialists, The SL Shop in Worcestershire. It comes with its original owner’s manual and service book, the latter with 14 stamps up to 1972 at 63,935 miles. Appearing to be in good condition throughout with a nice original red leather interior and new carpets, it has an MOT until June 2012.
