Launched in 1962 to replace the MGA which had done wonders for the reputation of the marque and sold in previously unheard-of numbers, the MGB was also an immediate success. Powered by an enlarged 1,789cc version of the BMC 'B' series engine with pushrod operated overhead-valves, it developed a useful 94bhp, could hit 100mph with ease and produced bags of torque at very low revs. Providing comfortable accommodation for two, it was available in both GT and Roadster forms, both with plenty of luggage carrying capacity, and remains a very pleasing and practical classic today.

This fine 1973 example was sold back in 1992 to its previous owner by the Bristol MG Workshop for £8,000. It is understood that they had undertaken an extensive restoration programme. The current owner purchased the car in 1999 and has carefully maintained and improved it since. 18 old MOTs show that it has covered 38,000 miles since 1992.

The vendor has confirmed that in his ownership he has fitted new rear springs, a new steering rack, full Lumenition breakerless ignition, an unleaded head, uprated heater matrix and four Minilite-style alloy wheels with new tyres. In addition, in 2005 he replaced the offside rear wing and had further restoration work undertaken at the rear of the car. It was also resprayed at this time. Since then he has fitted a Motolita steering wheel and a “Windstop”, along with a new clutch master cylinder, propshaft, seat squabs, high power alternator and the car has been converted to a single 12v battery. He confirms that it has only been used on fine days and has always been garaged, the only non-functioning item being the rev counter which seems to have been affected by the electronic ignition. It also has a stainless steel exhaust. MOTd until July 2012 this is a most attractive example in vibrant bright orange and has appeared in several adverts for Waxoyl and Draper Tools, examples of which accompany the vehicle on file.

With the 50th Anniversary of the MGB taking place next year, this looks to be an ideal way of joining in the fun with a fully sorted, well prepared example – ready to go.
