Popularised by Princess Anne in the 1970s (she owned at least eight, all with the registration number 1420 H), the Reliant Scimitar GTE remains one of the most practical classics that money can buy. Clothed in a handsome glassfibre body and powered by the trusty Ford 3-litre V6 engine and box, this sporting estate offers a huge amount of style and versatility for very little money.

Launched as the SE5 in 1968, the car was replaced by the SE5A in September 1972 which had a revised interior fascia, slightly more powerful engine and a more modern gearbox. In 1976 this was in turn replaced by the longer, wider and more luxurious SE6. In 1980 the final version, the SE6B came out, now with better brakes and suspension and a new Ford Cologne 2.8-litre V6 engine. Only 437 SE6Bs were made before production came to an end in 1986.

Finished in the colours of Champagne with chocolate and mushroom trim this late, galvanised chassis Scimitar was ordered from Worcester & District Motor Co with the following extras: Wolfrace alloy wheels, electric windows, electric aerial, electric mirrors and manual sunroof. This Scimitar has been fastidiously maintained since new by its one and only owner, who purchased it in November 1984 for the sum of £11,396.48 (having negotiated a healthy 15% discount off list price).

Powered by Ford’s 2.8 V6 Cologne engine, this GTE benefits from a manual overdrive gearbox and power steering. The only deviations from its original specification have been the fitment of a stainless steel fuel tank and stainless steel exhausts. Along with the original purchase invoices and brochures, this Scimitar comes with its factory supplied owners manual, toolkit and jack, and a full service history record with supporting invoices for its 105,000 miles to date.

Regrettably, due to the owner’s ill health, the car has been unused and kept in a heated garage for the last six years. Recently taken out of storage and recommissioned for sale, it has just had a full service, new MOT, and alloy wheel refurbishment. Having been carefully maintained since new this GTE is said to be a delight to drive compared to the usual examples, with no squeaks, leaks or rattles, good oil pressure and everything working as it should. How many more one owner Scimitars can be left out there?
