Undoubtedly one of the most imperious motorcars ever to grace the public highway, the Mercedes 600 was the ultimate in 1960s power dressing and no self-respecting dictator would be seen in anything less. Launched in 1964, everything about the car was designed to impress, from its vast size, weight and cost, to its mighty 6.3-litre V8 engine, opulent interior and complex hydraulic system that powered everything from the windows and seats to the automatically closing doors, sun-roof and boot lid. Adjustable air suspension gave the car good ride and handling over any road surface while individual air conditioning systems front and rear kept the occupants cool.

The most popular version was the 10' 6" wheelbase saloon that could seat up to six passengers, while the long-wheelbase Pullman limousine – a veritable leviathan exceeding 20' in length and beloved of Heads of State, not to mention a succession of Popes and pop stars – could accommodate up to eight. Despite its vast bulk, the 600 was endowed with highly respectable performance, reaching 60mph in a little under 10 seconds and exceeding 125mph flat out. Production of the 600 lasted until it was quietly deleted from the range in 1981 by which time just 487 Pullmans had been produced and 2,677 saloons.

Dating from 1968, this particular SWB Saloon is a very rare RHD model that has covered only 62,200 miles from new in the hands of just five owners. The metallic green bodywork has recently been sympathetically restored including a full repaint and new chrome where required. The tan leather interior is all original and said to be in very good condition throughout. Mechanically the car is said to be excellent, benefitting from a recent major service and a fresh MOT and driving superbly. This is a fabulous machine that will make you feel like a film star every time you drive it. We love it!
