Triumph’s move to the unit construction twin engine began with the 3TA/Twenty-one 350cc in 1957, while the 500cc continued in pre-unit form. This was superseded in 1959 when a full 490cc version of the 3TA was launched as the 5TA /Speed Twin sharing many components with the smaller machine, but with larger diameter wheels, longer centre stand and larger bore exhausts. Both models were dubbed "Bathtub" for the enclosures to the rear which cynics claimed looked like an upturned bathtub.
This April 1959 machine is standard with the exception of the useful uprating to 12volt electrics which gives better starting and brighter lights. All tinware is original steel, wheels have been rebuilt recently with new chrome rims and the bike has benefitted from new exhaust systems.
477XUT comes with current MOT to May 2012 although tax has recently expired, is in running order and ready to ride away.
