Lancia Beta Spyder

First launched in 1972, the Beta range was the first all-new car made by Lancia under the ownership of their new parent FIAT. As usual it was designed and tooled within a very tight timescale. It was kept within budget thanks to the use of the lusty and well proven twin-cam FIAT powerplant, albeit heavily reworked to improve performance and to drive the front wheels rather than the rear. The chassis, suspension, interior and bodywork, however, were very definitely the work of the Lancia engineers.
The range consisted of a 4-door saloon, 3-door sports estate (HPE), the mid-engined Monte Carlo, 2+2 coupe and the 2+2 Spyder. It is interesting to note that all 9,390 of the Pininfarina designed Spyders were in fact built by Zagato.

This 1977 example underwent a complete back to metal restoration by marque specialists Penley Classic Cars in 1990. Repairs as needed were made to the bodyshell which was stripped and primed inside and out. Invoices are on file which show the extent of the work which included a rebuilt engine with reground crank and new bearings. A new rear hood section was subsequently fitted in 2003.
MOTd until May 2012, the vendor reports that it drives very well, but that it isn’t getting the use it deserves hence the reason for sale. Rare can hardly be the right word for these Beta Spyders, yet there is a surprisingly good source of spare parts and they make an interesting alternative, offering flair and performance just as they did when they were new.
