Launched in 1992, the E36 marked a big step forward in the evolution of BMW's three-series, which had first appeared in 1975. Larger, wider and more luxurious than its E30 predecessor, it was also even better built with superb rear-wheel drive dynamics that would please even the sportiest driver. The front suspension was still MacPherson strut design but the rear suspension received a new 'Z-axle' featuring a multilink system that kept the car glued to the road no matter how hard you pushed it.

It was available with a choice of engine sizes but cream of the crop was the 328i, as here. Under the bonnet lurked a silky smooth all-alloy 24-valve 2.8-litre straight-six with a hefty 193bhp on tap. This gave the car sparkling performance, launching it to 60mph in just 6.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 140mph. To help manage all this power, automatic traction and stability control came as standard.

Your cataloguer's wife has owned a 328i for over ten years and can confirm that the build quality is amazing – the car is approaching 140,000 miles but the engine still feels as sweet as ever and it is still on its original clutch, exhaust and brake discs (maybe she isn’t driving it hard enough?).

Dating from 1997, this 328i Convertible Automatic has covered only 51,700 miles from new and is finished in striking Metallic Emerald Green with contrasting full grey leather trim. Described as being a “stunning and original example”, it has had just three owners from new, the first being a titled Lady who lived in London. Refinements include full power hood, central locking, climate control, PAS, ABS, factory fitted alloy wheels, a face-off CD/tuner, driver/passenger air bags, electric windows and door mirrors.

The car comes with lots of documentation including nine previous MOTs to verify the mileage plus many receipts for routine servicing. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, it also has a rare and desirable factory hardtop. All you need now is a sunny day on which to enjoy it…

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT; Please note the minor revision to the estimate.
