History

DAIMLER SOVEREIGN 2.8 ELX 436J The much vaunted all-new Jaguar XJ6 had been eagerly awaited for some time when it finally appeared in 1969. The product of Sir William Lyons, it was derived from his series of medium saloons, the S-type, MK X and 420 cars, and drew heavily on their stylistic influences, but was altogether a smoother, more modern and integrated design. It immediately became a best seller on both sides of the Atlantic. An ?upmarket? version known as the Daimler Sovereign was introduced at the same time, wearing the traditional Daimler fluted radiator grille, but was otherwise visually identical. The cars were introduced with 4.2 and 2.8 litre versions of Jaguar?s magnificent twin camshaft six-cylinder engine, and this is an example of the latter. This engine, when coupled with the rare four-speed plus overdrive gearbox, as fitted to ELX 436J, gives sparkling performance with very reasonable economy for such a large and commodious saloon. This is a quite exceptional example of the rare early Daimler Sovereign having been first licenced on 15th January 1971, and it is believed to have covered a mere 38,000 miles, which is supported by a sheaf of MOT certificates from 1980 to date. The interior is magnificently trimmed in light tan hide, with a very well stocked, polished walnut dashboard. An expensive Sony CD player was recently fitted, although the original radio is available with the car. The body is superbly finished in Connaught green and was the result of a bare-metal respray by Phoenix Car Restorations of Eardisley in 1998 costing some ?6,000. A very large file relating to work carried out on the car, includes much mechanical renovation in recent times by Phoenix and also by Vintage Sports Engines of Llandrindod Wells who completely stripped and rebuilt the engine. The car is totally reliable, and in daily use. This magnificent Daimler Sovereign is offered with a new MOT certificate, a full history file and set of owner?s handbooks. It is Road Fund Tax free and presents a rare opportunity to obtain a really sound, well-sorted and immaculate car at a very reasonable estimate. Estimate ?1,500-3,000
