The BMW E9 2500 and 2800 were launched in 1968 in a bid to muscle in on the monopoly that Mercedes-Benz held over the German luxury saloon market. BMW certainly had a run-away success as it not only sold extremely well in Europe, but was to build BMW’s reputation in the US where it was sold as the 'Bavaria' as well as spawning the beautiful coupe versions, the CSi and CSL.

Contemporary road testers loved the strong, smooth engine, good acceleration and impressive fuel efficiency. They also praised the contemporary styling, the handling and how it managed to accommodate four large people and masses of luggage. Replaced by the 7-Series in 1977, these were expensive cars in their day and were not a common sight on UK roads.

This tax exempt example was purchased new in 1972 by a Mr Thomas of Newport who kept it until 1979. It is now offered from a deceased estate as a two owner vehicle. It has been well cared for and although it was last used in 2008, it has just been freshly MOTd for sale, the odometer showing 72,000 miles.

These rare and attractive cars don’t often come onto the market, but are definitely something a bit different. With highly sophisticated engineering, they are also currently very cool thanks to appearances in the recent Bourne Trilogy films. Should the new owner wish, there is a spare engine and gearbox available by separate negotiation.

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT; Please note that the vendor has been unable to take this car for an MOT and it is therefore offered without a fresh MOT as stated.
