Jaguar’s legendary XJ range of world-beating saloons was launched in 1968 but was beset with build quality issues in the Series 2 cars of 1974-1978 before bouncing back to form with the magnificent Series 3 of 1979-1992.
With levels of ride quality and refinement that have not been significantly bettered to this day, the Pininfarina-styled S3 came in various engine sizes, the biggest and best being the mighty 5.3-litre V12 which packed a 290bhp punch and could propel the car to 150mph. Top of the range was the wonderful Daimler Double Six which had an even more luxurious Vanden Plas spec interior and extra sound-proofing to waft its occupants along in near silence at three-figure speeds with barely a ripple on a glass of champagne.
This particular Double Six dates from August 1980 and comes in a lovely colour combination of mid-metallic blue with a light tan leather interior. It has covered only 37,600 miles from new in the hands of five owners, the current vendor owning it since 2009. Appearing to be in largely good and original condition throughout, it has been very little used in recent years but is said to drive very well with excellent oil pressure and temperature.
It comes with all its original handbooks in their original wallet, including the Passport to Service book which is stamped six times up to 24,709 miles in 1985. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, this low mileage luxury cruiser looks excellent value at the guide price suggested today.
