Born as the result of a collaboration between Issigonis and John Cooper, designer and builder of Formula 1 and rally cars, the legendary Mini Cooper was launched in 1961.
The car featured a race-tuned engine, twin SU carburettors, a closer-ratio gearbox and front disc brakes, uncommon at the time in a small car. In line with the rest of the Mini range, the Cooper models received the Mk II updates in 1967 consisting of a squarer grille, larger rear window and larger rear lamps. In Cooper S guise, the car immortalised itself by winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967.
This lovely matching numbers example dates from 1969 and was kept by its previous owner for 11 years. During this time, he undertook a complete nut-and-bolt restoration, going right through the car from top to bottom.
The body shell was restored with the usual A-post repairs and then the mechanics received the same level of care, the engine and gearbox being rebuilt with a higher final drive (3.4:1) to give a higher and more civilised cruising speed. It has been fitted with new replica ‘S’ wheels, new carpets, boot card, was professionally painted in red and looks superb. Fitted with the rare reclining seat option, this car has been well restored, looking as good underneath as it does on top.
MOTd for 12 months, it has covered virtually zero miles since completion and with the values of nice Coopers going through the roof, looks good value at the suggested guide price.
