The Series III Land Rover was introduced in 1971 and ran until it was replaced by the coil-sprung 90 in 1985 by which time over 440,000 had been produced. As testament to the genius of the original concept,  the millionth Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1976.

In truth the S3 was little altered from the Series IIA, featuring a new plastic grille, full synchromesh gearbox and from 1980 a 5-bearing crankshaft. The headlights were mounted on the outside of the wings, a carry-over from the late series IIA models, and the tough plastic dashboard was moved in front of the driver. A number of new options were added, which included de-luxe seats as fitted to this example here.

First registered in May 1981, this diesel 88” looks to have been well cared for. It has been in regular use until recently and its 63,000 miles are believed genuine. A file with 12 old MOTs accompanies the vehicle and it will carry a fresh test by the time of the sale. Recent work has included a new outrigger by the fuel tank and a professional repair to the bulkhead by the pedals - leaving the chassis in sound condition - whilst a new exhaust and rubber floor mats have also just been fitted.

Described by the vendor as running really well with a sweet sounding engine in a clean engine bay, it has a tilt on the rear and looks ready for business.
