Undoubtedly one of the greatest saloon cars of all time, the Jaguar MkII was launched to ecstatic reviews in 1959.

With monumental performance for its time (the 3.8 boasted 220bhp, 125mph, 0-60 in 8.5 seconds), it had a habit of embarrassing most sportscars of the day yet could carry four adults in comfort. It quickly gained a somewhat raffish image, winning friends on both sides of the law – no sixties bank job was complete without a MkII getaway car fishtailing away from the scene, with the rozzers pursuing in a 3.8.

From September 1967 the MkII range was replaced by the 240 and 340 models with slimmer bumpers, chrome grilles in place of the front fog lights and Ambla, rather than leather, interiors. Introduced to keep the range attractively priced until the launch of the new XJ6 in September 1968, some 2,788 340s were made during the period - the 240 carrying on as a budget model for some time to come.

The good news was that thanks to a new straight-port cylinder head and twin SU carbs, a 240 was noticeably quicker than a 2.4 and a 340 had at least the performance of the old 3.8.

This particular manual overdrive 340 was first registered in Kenilworth in May 1968 and has had just five owners to date, the current lady owner acquiring it back in 1998. During her 15-year ownership the car has been in regular light use and is said to have always proved totally reliable and been a pleasure to drive, especially with factory power steering fitted.

The indicated mileage of just over 75,000 is said to be genuine and is backed up by the original service book which is stamped 19 times up to November 1980 at 59,284 miles (at which point the book runs out of pages) plus many old MOTs. Although the body and paintwork could now do with some minor attention here and there, the car is said to be very sound with an excellent chassis that has been regularly treated with rust-proofer.

Taxed until December and MOTd until next January, the car is ready to drive away today and is only reluctantly being sold due to the advancing years of the owner.
