Commer, short for Commercial Cars Ltd., dates back to 1905, manufacturing a series of quality commercial vehicles in the 1 to 6-ton range. As with many such companies, busy times were had during the First World War with over 3,000 Commer 4-Tonners leaving the Luton works.
Unfortunately for them, these serviceable machines flooded the post-war market making sales in austerity Britain particularly difficult. Humber took over the firm in 1926 and when they in turn were absorbed by the Rootes Group in 1928, sufficient resources existed to design the brilliant range of Centaur and Superpoise models.
The LN5, or Forward Control 5-Tonner, was widely respected for its performance, economy and reliability. This superb 1937 example has been in the hands of the vendor for 15 years. During this time it has had a complete ‘no expense spared’ restoration, with bills totalling over £40,000. The end result is testament to the quality of the work done, the vehicle looking stunning throughout and having barely run since completion.
For sale only because of the loss of storage space, it represents an opportunity to acquire a rare and superb example of one of the best workhorses of the period. Ready to go and show, it would make a superb promotional vehicle and be a valuable addition to any collection.
