Introduced in 1965, the Pininfarina styled MGB GT 2+2 was largely based on the convertible, but used a taller windscreen and new roof line. The MGB range was an enormous success and its popularity as an affordable fun car has not diminished.

Furthermore its 95bhp B-Series engine with twin 1 ½ “ SUs makes for a 105mph top speed. By 1974 the company had reacted to the new US bumper regulations by introducing rubber bumpers, raising the car in the process to meet the lighting regulations. This US spec became standard across all markets, continuing onto the final production run in 1980. Their reliability, performance and excellent handling mean that there is no reason why MGBs cannot be used every day.

Dating from 1979, COX 649V has been owned by the vendor since 1990 and comes with a large file of invoices for work done. In 2009, around 3,000 miles ago, a replacement engine supplied by the MGB Hive was fitted, along with a new water pump, oil cooler and carburettor recon kit. Since then, a new clutch, brake shoes, shackle kit and alternator have been fitted, leaving the car in very sound usable condition.

The interior also gained new leather seats and a replacement centre console and gear gaiter. Its comfortable leather interior, Webasto sunroof and over-drive make this an ideal long distance cruiser, a good MGB feeling surprising modern even by the standards of today.

With a vast array of marque specialists, a highly active club scene and the availability of any spare part at modest cost, the MGB must rank alongside the Morris Minor as the easiest form of classic motoring around.
