Triumph revitalised its classic TR range in 1968 and introduced the Karmann-styled TR6. Sharp, clean and fresh, the TR6 sported a more aggressive body with revised front and rear end styling although the centre section remained the same as the TR4 and TR5.

For the UK market, the straight-six fuel-injected 150bhp 2,498cc engine also carried over from the previous TR5 model, although from 1973 it was changed for a milder 125bhp unit to meet stricter emissions regulations. In full-fat 150bhp form it could sprint to 60mph in 8.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 120mph.

Widely regarded as the last of the proper TRs, it had potent front disc brakes, independent front suspension and a very sporting ride. Inside was a very pleasant place to sit with pile carpets on floors and boot, plush-looking bucket seats, a lovely wooden dashboard and a full complement of instrumentation. A huge sales success, more than 94,000 TR6s were built (90% of them for the US market), before it was replaced by the much softer TR7 in 1975.

Supplied new by Somerset Motors of Yeovil in August 1973, this TR6 has had just one owner throughout its life and has only covered some 73,400 miles to date. Always kept in a heated garage and used in fine weather only, it remains in excellent condition throughout with lovely red paintwork and a nicely preserved black vinyl interior.

A desirable overdrive gearbox model, it is also fitted with an original factory hardtop, a stainless steel exhaust and a recent set of quality Yokohama tyres. The original service book shows that it was serviced 12 times up to October 1976 at 48,600 miles, all at the supplying dealer, and it has continued to be meticulously maintained since then.

Very little used in recent years, the car has just been fully recommissioned for sale including a thorough service when a pair of 1 ¾ inch SU carbs were also fitted in place of the original fuel injection system. The original soft-top and frame are present, as is a period 8-track stereo and a box of around 50 8-track cassettes. The original owner’s handbook is also included.

Appearing to be exceptionally sound underneath, the car is said to drive beautifully and certainly sounded in excellent health as we manoeuvred it to take these pictures. With an MOT until January 2014, this lovely sportscar car now needs a proud second owner to continue to cherish it in the manner to which it has become accustomed.
