The MGB must be the easiest classic to own – reliable, robust, with a fair turn of speed and a high and relaxed cruising gate. A whole industry has been built up around the supply of parts, to the extent that you can buy a complete new bodyshell.

Launched back in 1962, the ‘B’ Roadster had a monocoque body which was a first for MG. It was an immediate success and was followed by the pretty Pininfarina-styled GT in 1965. A taller more upright screen didn’t upset the lines, making for a practical and comfortable Coupe, the model becoming the most successful sportscar ever until the arrival of the Mazda MX5.

This 1974 example has clearly had a great deal of money spent on its bodywork in the recent past. New rear wings have been fitted, along with sills on both sides. The vendor advises us that the floors also look to have been replaced and that it sits on nice clean Rostyle wheels and good tyres. The rear bumper has recently been replaced along with the carpets and the interior is clean and tidy.

It was previously in long term ownership by a member of the MG Owners Club who owned it from 1991 until 2012. Now requiring recommissioning before it can be used on the road, the engine last ran about six months ago and was reported as running well at that time. Complete with the desirable aluminium bonnet, the shell has also not been cut about to fit a sunroof. This looks to be a very solid basis for a budget chrome bumper MGB which could be back on the road in a relatively short space of time.
