Launched in 1989, the R129-series took the fabled Mercedes SL range to new heights of technical excellence. Traditionally the most sporting model of the MB line-up, the SL was the preserve of the rich and famous when new and many F1 drivers used them as day-to-day cars in the early nineties, Ayrton Senna included.
From the poetic motion of the electric soft-top hood to the roll bar that automatically flipped up if the car sensed an accident, the cars oozed sophistication. They had all the latest technology such as adaptive suspension with active damping, airbags, traction control, electric seats and a superb new five-link rear suspension all as standard.
In the middle of the range sat the 300SL, introduced in 1990 and remaining in production until 1993. It was powered by a creamy smooth 3-litre straight six that produced 190bhp and could waft the car to 140mph.
This 1992 example is said to be in good condition throughout with shiny red paintwork and a black leather interior. It has covered some 96,000 miles from new and comes with lots of service history to show regular maintenance. Said to drive beautifully it comes with both hard and soft tops and has an MOT until March 2014. These lovely cars are exceptionally good value at the moment and we can't see them staying at this modest price level for much longer.
