As early as 1942, Austin started working on a replacement for the pre-war 28hp Ranelagh limousine, however with their commitments to war production running until 1947, it wasn’t until that year that the all new A110 Sheerline was introduced.

Just 12 of these were delivered before a more powerful 3,995cc straight-six was implanted taking power to 130bhp. Conceived by Leonard Lord as a competitor for the Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the imposing Sheerline was offered at a fraction of the price, although it was still a hefty £1,277 plus the option of fitted suitcases at £21.

The design team were told that it must look traditional, have knife edge formal styling and big headlights – they certainly fulfilled the brief. Inside, wood and armrests abounded, whilst the occupants could be wafted along at a good 65mph cruising speed with over 80mph available if required. The rather low gearing meant that once top was selected using the nice column change at about 30mph, it could be left in that ratio for most of the journey.

This 1950 Sheerline was purchased by the vendor in 1998, the previous owner having kept it for 10 years. A large history file shows that it was restored in the 1990s, the current owner having kept it in storage for much of his ownership. Recently recommissioned, he experienced some mysterious fuel starvation problems, now solved thanks to a completely renovated petrol tank, new fuel lines and an SU fuel pump. It now runs beautifully and has recently had a stainless steel exhaust fitted.

Shortly after purchase he had the radiator surround chrome plated which has now deteriorated slightly.  They were originally painted body colour as standard, the chrome finish being a factory option. The paintwork could do with some attention in places, however the interior, trimmed in West of England Cloth, has a super patina, the wooden dashboard exuding period charm.

With just three previous owners, a few spares and its original driver’s handbook, service manual and parts list, this imposing and original Sheerline A125 is a classic piece of post-war Austin quality engineering. Sitting in the driving seat, the view down the bonnet is most impressive, the enormous headlights dominating the view. Throw in the wonderful cabin ambience and effortless performance and it all adds up to a delightful motoring experience.
