Before the Second World War the Indian concern was one of the mightiest motorcyle makers in the world but post war they struggled on briefly with their range of V-twins before finally giving up on manufacturing their own designs.

They had a large dealer network throughout the United States so looked to British and European models to sell under the Indian badge. Matchless, James, Royal Enfield and Velocette machines were among those supplied to the US market to be sold under a slightly different specification with the Indian badge.

The machine offered here is an Indian Woodsman 500cc Competition with the all-alloy high compression engine – basically a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 scrambler badged as an Indian and supplied with a QD lighting set to make it a dual purpose competition and road machine.

This machine was despatched in July 1957 from Royal Enfied, Redditch, to Brockhouse Motors, West Bromwich. These machines are a rare sight, even in the USA where they were sold, and this represents an opportunity to own a rare genuine competition machine that few will have heard of, let alone seen in the metal.

Said to be in running order and supplied with its lighting set complete with original QD plug-in harness, it is not yet UK registered but comes with a dating letter enabling this to take place if desired.
