Enthusiastically received on its launch in 1982, the 944 was one of Porsche’s most successful models through to end of production in 1991 when it was superseded by the 968.

With one of the smoothest (and largest) four-cylinder engines produced, the 944 was sold in coupe, convertible and turbo-charged variations. All were great sports cars to own with near 50/50 weight distribution giving fantastic handling. These Porsches provide all the thrills of sports car ownership combined with a high degree of reliability, good fuel economy, excellent build quality and readily available parts. A good Porsche 944 is a classic car that can still be used every day.

Delivered to its first Edinburgh based owner in 1986, this 944 Lux was ordered from the factory in Crystal Green metallic with a complementing sable cloth interior. Being a 1986 model it benefits from the ‘oval dash’ interior, providing a more comfortable driving position over earlier 944s, improved instrumentation and switchgear, along with associated suspension upgrades, an aerial built into the windscreen, and a larger fuel tank.

The mileage of 152,000 is supported by an excellent service history – no fewer than 21 stamps in the maintenance booklet, with specialist invoices since, and 21 old MOT certificates. The current MOT expires in October 2013.

In the current enthusiast ownership since 2004, this 944 Lux is described as “mechanically and bodily very good”. The interior is also good and tidy, with a CD/radio fitted. As this 944 is a non-sunroof model, the interior is nice and dry. Quality tyres are fitted, still with plenty of tread, and the ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels are in good condition.

Driving just as a good 944 should, this Porsche exhibits no mechanical issues and is ready to be driven anywhere. Offering superb performance for rubber bumper MGB money, the value of these fine cars is starting to rise so now could be the time to enjoy one whilst they still remain affordable.
