The Triumph motorcycle range had lacked a 350cc model since the demise of the 3T twin in 1951, however this was to change dramatically with the all new, unit construction Model 21, launched in 1957.

This was a major step in design and was a first for Triumph, making the twin range more modern, with cleaner lines – not just the engine, but also the streamlined enclosed bodywork, cruelly dubbed ‘bathtub’ by the public. The 21 name was a reference to the cubic inch capacity favoured across the other side of the Atlantic, this being quickly altered to 3TA for the UK market.

The Model 21 continued in the Triumph range until 1966, a larger 490cc version, the 5TA being produced from 1959 and by 1963 even the 650cc flagship bikes were given the unit construction treatment.

The model presented here dates from 1959 and has been restored in the more sporting T90 styling, losing the ungainly enclosures. The vendor states that it has been used infrequently for the last few years after being the subject of a comprehensive overhaul about eight years ago. The engine and gearbox are said to be in sound condition, starting easily and riding well. The wheels have been rebuilt, new tyres and tubes fitted, the brakes relined, new chains fitted, paintwork smartened up and a Siamese exhaust fitted.

The bike successfully completed the Irish National Rally in 2006, ridden by an American guest. No faults were encountered and the bike was given high praise by the rider who wanted to buy it to take back to the States.

There are one or two minor but desirable modifications. The centre stand has been altered to allow easier parking, there is an extra instrument panel and a twin leading shoe brake has been fitted. In the current ownership since 2004, it is currently on SORN until April 2014.
