A significantly improved version of the much-loved TC, the TD was launched in 1950 and proved a great success for MG, almost 30,000 being sold in the next three years, the vast majority to the booming US market.

The new rack-and-pinion steering sharpened up the Midget’s responses considerably, while the more rigid Y-Type chassis improved durability and handling. Engine-wise, it was the same story as before, with the 1250cc XPAG engine in 54bhp form putting in a fine performance, although an upgrade in 1950 to 60bhp for the MkII livened things up still further.

The rare UK-supplied October 1951 car we offer here today has been subject to a rolling restoration over the last ten years. In 2006 the XPAG engine was subject to a major engine rebuild by well known MG guru Peter Edney at a cost of some £2,000 including a sports camshaft and the all-important rear oil seal conversion. According to the MOT certificates in the history file, the car has covered only 5,000 miles since.

The history file also contains a copy of an invoice, dated February 2003, detailing the cost of a new mohair hood, new half-tonneau cover and new sidescreens. It would also appear that the car has had new leather seats fitted in the last few years.

According to the V5 the car has had just 4 owners since 1975. Furthermore the accompanying MOT certificates suggest that the car has covered just 12,000 miles since 1977. The car comes with non standard pancake air filters, windscreen mounted wing mirrors, windscreen mounted air deflectors, original MG steering wheel and chrome luggage rack.

Altogether a delightful example of an iconic British sportscar that drives as well as it looks with a particularly sweet-running engine. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, this is an ideal car for summer classic car runs.
