The Michelotti-designed Stag and 2000 models gave Triumph a clear style consistency and when the Spitfire was starting to show its age, it too was given a Michelotti makeover.

Featuring a completely re-designed cut-off rear end and squared off front, the interior was also given the treatment: a proper full-width dashboard was provided, putting the instruments ahead of the driver rather than over the centre console. The engine continued at 1,296cc whilst by far the most significant change was to the rear suspension, which was de-cambered and redesigned to eliminate the unfortunate tendencies of the original swing-axle design.

In 1974 the engine was enlarged to 1,493cc and the name changed to the Spitfire 1500. Torque was greatly increased and the new engine at last made the Spitfire capable of 100mph. Other detail improvements included reclining seats with head restraints, wood-veneer dash, hazard flashers and electric washers. The last Spitfire 1500 rolled off the assembly line in August 1980.

This 1500 must be one of the last examples made as it was not registered until December 1981, some 16 months after production came to an end. Originally owned by a lady in Whitchurch, it was left to a gentleman in North Wales when she passed away. Purchased by the vendor from him nine years ago, it has barely been used since. Nine MOTs show that by 1987 the speedometer registered just 7,391 miles, increasing to just 9,169 miles in the ensuing 26 years. He informs us that the paint work is original, with just a few small touch ups which were done prior to his ownership.

Fitted with a works hard top, this overdrive-equipped model is not fitted with a hood. In nice original condition, it runs and drives much like a new car and certainly looks the part in its attractive bright orange livery and is MOTd until April 2014.
