By 1989 the Porsche 928 had gone soft. Yes, the latest S4 model had a 320bhp engine and could hit 160mph, but it had wallowy suspension and a slushy automatic gearbox that held no appeal for the sporting driver.

But then the 928 GT came out, a sharp and focused driver's car with 330bhp, 171mph top speed and, crucially, a five-speed manual gearbox and sports suspension. To quote Porsche racer and journalist Tony Dron: "They changed the 928 completely, turning it into an uncompromising sports GT quite unlike the wallowing luxury barge it had become... The 928 GT was set up to satisfy those who liked to drive hard, yet still not scare the pants off them... At long last the 928 had been made into a true driver's car with bags of character. A strong, growling beast, there really was something rather grand and magnificent about it."

Porsche were not to sell very many however, production running from early 1989 to late 1990 which was a shame as, for some, it was the best of the 928 breed. Better equipped than its predecessor the S4 and lighter than the succeeding GTS model they are as good to drive as people say, the vendor commenting that “it is probably the best cross country car I have ever driven.”

He found the car in Cowbridge whilst hunting for a 944 and couldn’t resist. It comes with a large history file from its previous owner, the service book showing a full Porsche service history to 48,000 miles in 1995, after which it was looked after by the Welsh Porsche Centre, with services at 54, 56, 63, 67, 70, 74, 78, 81, 82 and 85,000 miles, the latter taking place in 2001.

Since then, the car has been in storage and has only recently been let out, the odometer now showing some 90,000 miles accumulated from new. Due to be sold with a fresh MOT, the vendor advises that it is now due a service and that the air conditioning is not functioning. He adds that cosmetically it could do with some minor work externally, but that it drives beautifully and has the makings of a really super example of this rare and desirable model.
