Designed by Robert Chapron (who also penned the fabulous Citroen SM, an example of which also appears in this catalogue), the quirky GS was launched in 1970 and ran until 1980.

Voted European Car of the Year in 1971, it was probably the most technologically advanced car in its class with superior comfort, safety and aerodynamics to any of its rivals. Designed as a compact family saloon to fill the gap between the spartan 2CV and the luxurious DS, it became the best-selling Citroen for many years with over 1.8 million sold.

Available in saloon and estate versions, it had the usual ‘magic carpet’ ride thanks to Citroen’s superb hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension set up which could also raise or lower the car depending on the terrain. The excellent disc brakes (inboard at the front) and power steering were also hydraulically assisted as in the DS, and it shared that car’s single spoke steering wheel.

Power came from a flat-four air-cooled engine in four capacities from a 55bhp 1-litre to a 66bhp 1.3-litre, driving the front wheels via a four-speed gearbox. In 1,222cc form, as here, it was capable of 94mph thanks to its notably slippery shape.

Dating from January 1978, this GS Club has covered only 41,000 miles from new, the first owner keeping it for 20 years and only covering around 1,000 miles a year. The original purchase invoice shows that he bought it from Portfield Garages of Christchurch for a princely £2,579. Presented in Beige Gazelle with a Jersey Brown interior, the car is said to remain in very good and original condition throughout with a good service history from new.

It has recently been fitted with new suspension spheres and an accumulator sphere, the vendor stating that “the suspension and braking systems are now performing superbly.” Currently taxed and with an MOT until August, it is said to drive beautifully and is ready for immediate use. There are now only about 30 of these quirky saloons registered with the DVLA so you are unlikely to see another one coming the other way.
