Just as the Aston Martin DB5 was immortalised by Sean Connery's James Bond, so the Ford Mustang achieved iconic status in the hands of Steve McQueen's Lt Frank Bullitt, hurtling through the streets of San Francisco in the greatest car chase ever filmed.

To be fair to the car though, it had already taken America by storm, selling over one million units within 18 months of its April 1964 launch, four years before Bullitt put the icing on what was already an irresistible cake. Although McQueen drove a modified fastback GT version, at first the Mustang was only available as a 'notchback' coupe or a convertible.

Based around the chassis, suspension, and drivetrain of the Ford Falcon and Fairlane, it had a much stiffer frame and wider track to give it the handling to match its sporting looks. At least 200kgs lighter than the latest Mercedes C class, a full 2” narrower and only ½” longer, the Mustang is no over-bloated land yacht and can comfortably be piloted through narrow English streets.

Built in Dearborn, Michigan, in June 1968, this particular Coupe looks most eye-catching in Gulfstream Aqua Blue with a luxury Parchment vinyl interior. It is powered by 302ci (5-litre) V8 mated to a C4 automatic gearbox with a 2.79:1 axle ratio for more relaxed high speed cruising. It is also GT badged with GT steel wheels, hub caps and trims, GT pop-up fuel filler cap and GT painted side stripes. Other features include power steering, power brakes and air con.

Delivered new to Dallas, the car has spent its whole life in Texas and was imported from El Paso only last year. Said to be a good rust-free example, it has recently been treated to a reconditioned gearbox, new ring gear and starter motor, new front bottom ball joints and 4-wheel tracking alignment.

Recently serviced and said to drive well, it is taxed until July and is due to have a fresh MOT prior to the sale. This car just oozes Sixties cool and so will the lucky new owner, cruising along, windows down, Ray Bans on, Lalo Schifrin playing through the speakers.
