The long-awaited full convertible of the XJS was finally introduced at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show, some 13 years after the launch of the original car, and featured a reinforced floorpan, frameless doors and a sophisticated electric hood complete with heated glass rear window.
Underpinned by the same all round independent coil-sprung suspension and power assisted rack-and-pinion steering as its fixed head siblings, the soft-top came with anti-lock brakes as standard. Wonderfully smooth and refined, it was still powered by Jaguar’s magnificent 291bhp V12 engine and was capable of 150mph. Despite the hefty £40,000 price tag, a waiting list was quick to form.
Dating from May 1990, this particular Convertible looks especially sporting as it was fitted from new with a Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) bodykit that improved the aerodynamics at high speed. Presented in light metallic blue with a cream hide interior piped in blue, it has covered less than 72,000 miles and has a full service history comprising 13 dealer stamps to date, the last less than 2,000 miles ago.
Said to be in very good condition throughout and to drive beautifully, it is taxed until September, MOTd until May 2014 and is due to be driven over 150 miles to the sale. The nice private number plate is also included.
