Launched at the 1969 Brussels Motor Show, the Capri instantly became the most desirable model in Ford’s European range and was every thrusting young executive’s dream set of wheels.

With its aggressively long bonnet and swooping rear it looked like it was doing 100mph even when standing still. Conceived as a European alternative to the all-conquering Mustang, it was available in a wide range of engine sizes from a basic 1.3-litre four to a tarmac-ripping 3-litre V6.

Mechanically straightforward, a traditional live axle with leaf springs was deemed sufficient at the rear, while Ford's excellent Macpherson struts at the front and well weighted rack-and-pinion steering gave it a sufficiently sporting feel to justify its sports car looks.

This Capri MkI dates from March 1971 and has the rare Essex 2-litre V4 unit which produced 95bhp and 125lb/ft of torque. Said to be an exceptionally correct and original example it had just one owner from new right up until 2002 with just two more keepers since, the current vendor acquiring it in 2008. A nice early car with the distinctive flat bonnet, it also comes in top GT XLR specification with every available option.

The Tawny Dark Gold Metallic paintwork was refreshed earlier this year due to fading and the whole bodyshell is described as “superb and rust-free”. The black interior is also said to be in “near perfect” condition with a new headlining recently fitted. The 83,700 miles on the clock is believed to be genuine and is partially backed up by some 14 old MOT certificates plus a large history file including the original bill of sale for £1,356.01.

Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, it now only needs a lucky fourth owner who can continue to cherish it in the manner to which it has become accustomed. These MkI Capris are now getting extremely scarce and although prices have risen markedly in recent years we can’t help feeling that they still have some way to go.
