Jaguar launched its sporting XJS model in 1975 as a replacement for the legendary E-Type and the cars simply got better and better as the years rolled by.

Far more sophisticated than the E-Type, it was a paragon of stability and silence at speed with excellent handling for such a big car. In 1991 the XJS was substantially re-engineered and also got the superb new 4-litre 24-valve AJ6 engine that was virtually as quick as the old V12 but with far superior fuel economy (245bhp, 289lb/ft, 140mph and 26mpg).

Reliability was excellent and these AJ6 engines have been known to clock up huge mileages without drama. Build quality also improved markedly with a galvanized body shell finally putting paid to that old Jaguar bugbear – rust. The bodywork was also restyled by Geoff Lawson to give a more sleek and modern look that still turns heads today.

This particular XJS is the glamorous 4-litre convertible version that was launched in 1992. First registered in May 1993 it looks superb in light metallic blue with a grey hide interior following an extensive cosmetic refurbishment and full waxoil treatment in September 2013.

The car has only covered some 70,250 miles from new and comes with a full service history comprising 14 stamps to date (all but the last at Jaguar main agents) plus many supporting invoices and was last serviced only 200 miles ago. Said to drive beautifully with an MOT until June 2014, it comes with all its original handbooks, a Tracker anti-theft system and a personalised number plate that has been valued at £1,250. What more could you want?
