Sold between 1970 and 1978, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was designed to be a gentleman's sports tourer to compete head-on with rivals like the Mercedes SL.

A full four-seater, it was powered by an all-new Triumph-designed 2,997cc V8 engine that produced 145bhp, sufficient to propel the car to a heady 115mph with a wonderfully woofly exhaust note. With independent suspension all round, front disc brakes, power steering and a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic gearbox, it had sophisticated road manners and has always ranked as one of Britain’s most popular classic cars.

First registered in March 1971, this particular Stag has clearly led a very sheltered life to date, being owned by a succession of Stag enthusiasts, the last keeping it from 1986 until 2013. Apart from a quality repaint some years ago, the car is said to be wholly original with no signs of any previous welding and it still looks remarkably fresh today, the underside being almost as clean and tidy as the topside.

The last owner had the engine and gearbox fully rebuilt by marque specialist EJ Ward of Leicester some years ago and it has only covered a few hundred miles since, outings being mainly restricted to the MOT station and the occasional local show. A new hood has also been fitted along with a brand new set of alloy wheels with a new set of correct Michelin tyres and a full stainless steel exhaust system.

Said to drive beautifully and due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, it is surely one of the best-preserved Stags you could ever wish to find.
