It should come as no surprise that the continual development of the Mercedes-Benz designed, Steyr Puch built G-Wagen has made it the military spec vehicle of choice for armies across the globe.
The Australian army has just placed a massive order for the G-Wagen, sadly replacing the Land Rovers that have served them well since the 1970s. The G denomination stands for Gelandewagen (cross country vehicle), a roll in which it excels thanks to its permanent 4-wheel drive system and fully locking differentials, a feature which means that it is possible to make all four wheels to turn at once.
Dating from 1990, this 230GE was originally supplied with the lusty 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, although it has subsequently been fitted with a replacement unit, thought to be a 3-litre Mercedes-Benz 617A five-cylinder diesel. Potential bidders are asked to satisfy themselves as to the exact unit fitted and are advised that this change has not been reflected in the details shown on the V5.
MOTd until June 2014, it appears basically sound and is an ideal basis for further improvement.
