The popularity of the power-assisted bicycle continues to this day. The difference of course is that these days modern batteries are used instead of the old fashioned clip-on two-stroke power-packs which were so popular from about 1930 until the late ‘50s.

Dutch-based Berini produced a successful product, initially with a heart-stopping 26.5cc, later increasing to 32cc. Simply mounted on the front forks, the engine could be lowered onto the front wheel where a roller gripped the tyre.

Capable of propelling a normal bicycle at speeds up to 25mph, they could cover the best part of 200 miles on a gallon of fuel. These engines made the bikes quite exciting to ride as the added weight, dubious brakes and rather floppy frames of their host machine were not necessarily equal to the task in hand but were popular nevertheless.

The vendor purchased this bike in 2010. The non-transferable registration number TVS 598 comes on a current V5 which gives its declared date of manufacture as 1937. Also on file is an old style V5 and a copy of The Motor Cycle road test on the new 32cc model. Registered as a Glasgow and Co., this may refer to the make of bicycle or perhaps to the supplying dealer.
