The W113 Mercedes-Benz had a protracted birth. Mercedes management had realised that there was too large a gap between the heavy and rather underpowered 190SL and the vastly expensive 300SL Gullwing so a new model was planned.

Early developments were postponed while more important changes to the mainstream S Class saloon range were focused on. When it finally arrived in 1963, production techniques developed from the new saloon had formed the basis of the fabulous Paul Bracq designed W113 SL Roadster, complete with its distinctive 'Pagoda' hard top.

When production came to an end in 1971, nearly 49,000 had been sold, gaining slightly more power as the years passed thanks to larger engines using the 'multi-port' technology carried across from the Mercedes-Benz diesel engines.

This mid-range 250 model was ordered by its first owner, a Mr Linfield, through his local Worthing dealer HD Day and Sons in 1967. First registered SBP 599E, he opted for the ‘California’ model as it is referred to, in which the folding hood mechanism is exchanged for a single side-facing rear seat. It moved to a new owner in 1977 whose wife didn’t like the colour so he had it repainted in light blue, although he subsequently returned it to its original darker blue colour scheme.

The vendor, its third owner, managed to regain the super non-transferrable registration number 9 EFD which it had worn for some time. He has added a stainless steel exhaust, recent tyres and some replacement chrome trim items. A new injector pump has kept the engine running beautifully, the whole car looking very smart, the vendor reporting that it is in very good condition underneath.

The accompanying service book shows 9 service stamps to 1972 by which time it had covered 47,322 miles. The file also includes 13 old MOTs, one from 1978 showing that by then it had covered 63,032 miles. The odometer now indicates just 65,500 miles, a figure which the vendor believes is correct as it has seen very little use for some considerable time. Sold with a Haynes manual and parts book, it is MOTd until July 2014 and is a very nicely presented example.

These elegant and sophisticated Pagoda SLs have become very popular of late and we are delighted to be able to offer three lovely examples in this sale.
