Chevrolet and Ford have always been arch rivals, entering a race to top the American sales charts from the mid 1920s onwards.

Chevrolet held the upper hand from 1931 until 1959, mainly thanks to their unburstable six-cylinder engines and independent ‘knuckle joint’ suspension which they standardised as early as 1934. Ford lumbered on with their single transverse front leaf set-up until 1948, although boasted that their flat-head V8 was far better as it had more cylinders than the Chevrolet.

During the early stages of World War II, Chevrolet updated their range with a fresh 4-bearing 85bhp six-cylinder of 3,548cc. They fitted it to a new range of ‘Master’ models which had lost their traditional running-boards for the first time. The attractive two-door coupe was seductively called the Fleetline Aero Sedan, although not many (by Chevrolet standards) were produced, as from 1942 – 1945 all production turned to munitions and trucks for the war effort.

In late 1945 production resumed, with what was essentially the 1942 model range, renamed the Stylemaster and Fleetmaster.

This fine Stylemaster was imported into the UK from America late last year. Accompanied by very little in the way of paperwork, it has clearly had a comprehensive and high quality restoration and has been prepared for long distance driving. A rare collection of period accessories has been added, including twin spotlamps, a windscreen shade, and steering column mounted fan.

The vendor informs us that it drives as it should and creates a huge amount of interest wherever it goes.

CATALOGUE AMENDMENT: Please note that this vehicle is not fitted with a rev counter as detailed in the printed catalogue
