Launched in 1999, the W220 Series S-Class Saloon was the most luxurious model in the Mercedes range, the S being short for Sonderklasse (‘special class’), a flagship denoter that had begun with the W116 S-Class in 1972.

As with each new S-Class, the W220 introduced groundbreaking options such as Airmatic air suspension with active body control to sense body movement and strangle it at birth, and active ventilated seats which contained miniature fans to pump air through perforations in the leather. A satellite navigation system was also available along with the Command input control system, keyless entry and ignition and radar-based Distronic ‘smart’ cruise control that could automatically adjust your speed to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

A wide range of engines were available from a 224bhp 3.2-litre V6 to a 306bhp 5-litre V8. However, for the really power-crazed, an AMG version was also offered with a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 that pumped out 493bhp and a bonkers 516lb/ft of torque. Allied to a 5-speed ‘intelligent’ gearbox with Comfort, Sport and Speedshift settings, it could streak to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds with a limited 155mph top speed reached only a few heartbeats later.

“Find an open stretch of road, floor the S55 and you’ll soon know what it’s like to kompress the time/space continuum as the AMG-fettled sedan launches itself at the horizon with a single, seamless blast of forward thrust. Any doubt that the massive S55 can obliterate time with acceleration dissipates the moment you watch the speedo arc straight past 140mph and keep on going,” said American website The Truth About Cars.

This 2001 S55 AMG has covered some 99,000 miles from new with six service stamps to date, the last at 78,000 miles in November 2008. Naturally it is packed full of luxuries including electrically adjustable heated seats front and rear, a suede headlining, cruise control and a remote controlled DVD system with three screens in the back.

Finished in dark grey metallic with a beige hide interior, it is said to be in good condition throughout and to drive beautifully. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, this mega saloon looks stonking value at the guide price suggested and is sure to shock the breath from your passengers whenever you floor the pedal!

Please note the personalised number plate shown is not included and will be replaced with an age-related number prior to the sale.
