1968 was the first year of production for Yamaha’s AS1 125cc machine, much of its appeal laying in the use of components from the diminutive 50cc FS1E.
The swing-arm, wheels, hubs, forks and yokes were all sourced from the flyweight ‘Fizzy’, giving the 125cc vertical-twin a power to weight ratio more like a British 250 with a top whack of more than 75mph.
The owner of this machine had to wait until 1976 to get his hands on this 1968 example, buying it second hand through Les Griffiths Motors in Bridgend. Having now covered 22,519 miles, it is many years since it was last on the road, although we are advised that the engine still turns freely.
This collectible lightweight will need restoring before it can be used in anger again, a worthwhile project as these small Japanese machines are fast gaining a cult following, with so many having been sacrificed to the “god of speed” over the years.
